ALL INFORMATION PROVIDED BY ARCHELON
PLEASE DO -
Keep beaches clean. Don't throw plastic bags into the sea or leave them on beaches. These items are easily mistaken as jellyfish by turtles, their main food source, and can be lethal once ingested.
Turn off or shield lights that are visible from the beach. Turtles and especially turtle hatchlings are attracted to lights, which they think is the moonlight reflecting off the sea.
THINGS TO AVOID
Please try not to use nesting beaches at night time and please do not make bonfires on the beach. There is plenty of beach for everyone to share, please try and use an area away from the nests.
Please do not excavate the nests. Turtles, their nests, eggs and hatchlings are protected by Greek and International law. Fines and/or imprisonment could be expected.
Please do not remove the protective cages or shading corridors that are erected on the beaches. Also please try not to walk or trample on the small 'walkway' constructed for the hatchlings.
If you see hatchlings (baby turtles) making their way to the sea, DO NOT TOUCH THEM. Turtle hatchlings require the walk to the sea from their nest in order to develop their lungs. IT IS VITALLY IMPORTANT THEY REACH THE SEA ON THEIR OWN.
Please do not drive cars, motorcycles, quad bikes or 4x4s onto the nesting beaches.
IF YOU SEE A DEAD OR INJURED TURTLE
If you see an injured or dead turtle you can call the stranding networks number 0030 210 89 44 444 or contact the nearest coast guard station.
