A fairly busy week, we found another nest on the beach and there have been a few tracks found.
We are now up to six nests on our small slice of beach, which does not sound much but this time last year we had found just three!
The nests that were inundated last week all appear OK, some of the team were advised by ARCHELON to dig pits near them and check for standing water. Luckily they did not find any so at least it meant that an emergency relocation was not required. This is good as relocations are a tricky process at the best of times and to proceed with one after a few weeks of the eggs in the ground is not good for the nest. We would have had the experts at ARCHELON in to proceed with this delicate task. It would have been good for us to see this operation carried out, but not of benefit to the turtles. So, we are still crossing our fingers and await to see what will happen come nesting time.
We are hoping the nests will start to appear more regularly now we are in July. The nests take approximately seven weeks to hatch, so any nest found this month will be hatching in September/October.
The first nest we found in June should be ready for shading and the first signs of hatchlings sometime at the end of July / beginning of August so it is getting exciting.
Speak to you all in a week and I promise to update the pictures on the website now my PC has been sorted. There is a bit of a backlog so please give me a little time and I thank you for your patience.
Regards,
Ian
